Former Auburn guard signs with Cleveland Cavaliers

Former Auburn guard Sharife Cooper will be back in training camp with the Cleveland Cavaliers when the NBA team starts its preparations for the 2023-24 season on Oct. 3.

On Wednesday, the Cavaliers announced they had signed Cooper.

Cooper went to training camp with Cleveland last year, but he spent the 2022-23 season with the Cleveland Charge, the Cavaliers’ NBA G League affiliate.

In 45 games with the Charge, Cooper averaged 22.8 points, 7.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals. He was an All-NBA G League second-team selection, and he played in the 2023 NBA G League Next Up Game during the NBA All-Star Weekend in Salt Lake City.

Cooper played for the Cavaliers’ team in the NBA 2K24 Summer League in July. He averaged 13.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists in four games. Cooper missed the Cavaliers’ final two games because of a groin injury, but he earned a championship ring when Cleveland defeated the Houston Rockets 99-78 in the league title game.

The 48th player picked in the 2021 NBA Draft after averaging 20.2 points per game in his only season at Auburn, Cooper signed a two-way contract with the Atlanta Hawks.

The two-way contract allowed Cooper to play for the NBA team and its NBA G League affiliate, the College Park Skyhawks. He did most of his playing with the Skyhawks as he averaged 17.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 0.9 steals in 34 games.

Cooper played in 13 games with Atlanta in the 2021-22 NBA season. In 39 minutes on the court, he had seven points, five rebounds and five assists.
