What a bummer. Where Alabama ranks on list of happiest states

Happy is as happy does. Or at least that’s what they say.

But when it comes to the places in America where people are the happiest, it seems Alabama is falling far short.

Wallet Hub recently looked at a variety of factors – emotional and physical well-being and work environment, community and environment – to determine the “happiest” states in the U.S. Factored in these broader categories were things like share of adults with depression, sleep rates, life expectancy, number of work hours, commute times, employment rates, level of volunteerism, separation and divorce rates and weather.

With these factors as a guide, Utah came in as the happiest state in the U.S., followed by Hawaii, Maryland, Minnesota and New Jersey.

You have to go all the way down to number 45 to find Alabama. The state ranked 44th in emotional and physical wellbeing and work environment categories and 42nd in community and environment.

The only states more unhappy than Alabama were Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana and West Virginia.

In individual categories, Alabama ranked 48th worst when it came to adequate sleep rate, 49th in sports participation rate, 46th for public safety and 47th for volunteer rates.
