Design Review Committee: signage plans impact Birmingham historic districts

Twice a month, the city of Birmingham’s Design Review Committee convenes to discuss plans to make alterations to structures that fall within one of the city’s many historic and commercial revitalization districts. This column summarizes recent DRC activity with projects grouped by type and location. This edition of Design Review recaps the DRC meeting from August 23, 2023.

Decisions of the DRC, and applicants are responsible to carry out the plans as presented and approved. Any deviations from the approved plans cannot be undertaken without a return to the committee for approval.

Five Points South

Master Signage Plan – 1210 20th Street South – A draft Master Signage Plan (MSP) for the Mellow Mushroom building was presented to the committee for input. The draft included some consistency measures, style requirements such as raceway mounted channel letters and standardizing awnings, and rules for window vinyl placement. The final version of the MSP will return for vote at a later date.

The committee provided input but did not vote on the MSP.
