Former Alabama star explains viral tweet after loss to Texas

From his seat behind the Alabama bench, George Teague said he watched the postgame scene for probably 45 minutes Saturday night.

He wasn’t happy.

And the social media posts that resulted quickly went viral for the former Crimson Tide safety famous for making the extra effort. As of Tuesday morning, one post on X (formerly Twitter) has 1.6 million views. Another had 1.4 million.

The pointed message wasn’t about the fact Alabama lost to Texas, 34-24 on a high-energy Saturday night in Bryant-Denny Stadium. It was about how both teams responded. The videos showed the Longhorns celebrating at the mid-field logo before running to a crowd of visiting fans and singing the fight song.

“It’s one thing to lose but this can’t be happening,” the post with 1.6 million views read. “Wait until you see these other videos I send. It better piss some people off. Have some friggin pride!”

The point being made, Teague said in a phone interview Monday night with AL.com, became lost in the virality of the posts.

“It wasn’t only directed at Texas,” Teague said. “I think I was more upset with our guys. What I saw at the end of the game — I get it, you go out and shake hands and you do stuff at the middle of the field. But that’s not really what happened. A lot of our guys went straight to the locker room, which allows for other things to happen at the middle of the field. So I was initially very upset because all of the Texas players were out at the middle of the field and we had no representation out there, at all.”

As Texas took the final knee, a decent portion of the Alabama locker room sprinted directly toward its locker room in the north end zone of the field.

That’s not uncommon in recent years. A portion of the team will head straight to the dressing room regardless of the outcome but Teague would like to see that change.

“We always talk about the Bama Standard and that’s part of it,” he said. “We can’t just put our tails between our legs because we lost. And they beat us. Texas was a better football team than what we were on Saturday night but still that doesn’t mean they get to come over and hang out at the middle of the field while were sobbing somewhere.”

Teague, a first-round draft pick in 1993, was most famous for his hustle play in the 1993 Sugar Bowl win over Miami. Chasing down Lamar Thomas who appeared to have a walk-in touchdown has played for generations on Bryant-Denny Stadium videoboards as part of pregame hype compilations.

Seeing the current Crimson Tide players quickly exit to the locker room sent a message to the visitors, Teague said.

“After that, I think Texas was a little empowered, so now they’re out there doing the other shenanigans,” Teague said. “I took several videos. Players were out there taking pictures. There were staff members … out there at the middle of our field taking photo ops and things out there. So I think it was a little too much, actually.”

Part of the social media backlash saw users point out Alabama players’ brash reaction to last year’s 20-19 escape win over Texas in Austin. Players threw the Horns Down hand gesture to Texas players as they left the field.

Teague, who lives in the Dallas area and does TV work with the Cowboys, said he doesn’t condone that either.

“There’s a way that you win,” he said, “and it should always be with class.”

And it goes both ways.

“So from a player’s perspective,” Teague said, “I’m hearing what people are saying. ‘Oh, they’re just taking a photo.’ No, there’s more than that. There’s a reason we put that big symbol out there in the middle of the field because it means more than a little logo painted out there on some grass.

“We should be taking care of that, win or lose. That’s our house and we should protect it at all times.”
