Biden approval rating drops to 39%, poll shows
President Biden’s approval rating has dropped to 39%, according to the latest poll.
The poll, conducted by CNN, shows the president’s approval dropped 2 percentage points from July and 6 percentage points from January. Biden’s numbers on handling the economy were particularly troubling for Democrats, with 58% of respondents saying his presidency worsened economic conditions in the country, up 8 percentage points from the same time last year.
Only 26% said they felt Biden had the stamina and sharpness to serve effectively as president, compared to 74% who said he did not. Biden faired only slightly better – 28% -for those who said Biden inspires confidence in voters compared to 72% who said he does not.
Overall, 70% said things were going either pretty badly or very badly in the country.
Despite the low poll numbers, the survey showed Biden virtually tied with the Republican frontrunner, former President Donald Trump. If the election were held today, 46% said they’d vote for Biden, 47% for Trump with 5% saying they would vote for someone else and 2% did not plan to vote.
Among registered voters, 44% said any Democratic nominee would be better than Trump; 46% said any Republican nominee would be better than Biden.
The poll was conducted Aug. 25-41 among 1,503 adults with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. You can see complete results here.
