Auburn injury report: Mardner, Rhym, Keys out against Cal

Auburn appears to be as close to full health as it has been in weeks as it gets ready for kickoff against Cal.

Wide receiver Nick Mardner and cornerback J.D. Rhym are in line to miss their second consecutive game as they were not dressed for warmups in Berkeley before facing Cal.

Mardner was on the field with Auburn wearing his jersey over a sweatshirt. He practiced in full with Auburn this week during a period open to media members. So too did Rhym.

Rhym was not seen on the field during warm-ups. It’s unknown if he traveled with the team to Cal.

Austin Keys was the only player who was not seen during the Tuesday open practice session. Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze confirmed Wednesday that Keys will be out for “a while” after getting thumb surgery.

A hand surgeon told AL.com that recovery from that type of surgery could take between 6-8 weeks.

Keys did make the trip and was on the field before the game wearing a sling on his right arm. Inside the sling, his thumb was wrapped in a cast.

Elsewhere, running back Jarquez Hunter, cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett, linebacker Jalen McLeod and safety Caleb Wooden all warmed up in pads after not playing last week.

Hunter’s status has been uncertain for months after a sex tape leaked on Twitter that allegedly showed Hunter. Auburn’s statement about indefinite suspensions came soon after. The Montgomery Advertiser reported that an Auburn spokesperson said the suspensions related to “videos that were posted on social media.” Allegedly, other Auburn players were involved with the video.

But the Auburn statement did not state which players would face suspensions.

Hunter came out with Auburn’s punt returners before the rest of the offense.

His warming up in pads does not necessarily guarantee he will play in any capacity.

Hunter traveled with the team and took part in the pregame Tiger Walk. He took the field with the team wearing Auburn’s team warm-up hoodie and listening to music on his AirPods.

Pritchett was not a participant in Auburn’s open practice before the UMass game and ultimately did not play in that game.
