Markets, Birmingham stocks pick up small gains

Wall Street scratched out a positive day Friday to close the week on a semblance of a high note, as did our Birmingham and Alabama Stock Report.

This wasn’t a down week for WestRock, which soared 4% for the second consecutive day to pace the gainers.

Other local notables that saw gains: Warrior Met Coal (2.2%) and ProAssurance (1.1%).

Nucor led the decliners at -2.3%.

Overall, stocks edged higher on Friday, but not by enough to keep Wall Street from closing out its first losing week in the last three.

The S&P 500 ticked up 6.35 points, or 0.1%, to 4,457.49 after falling for three straight days. It lost 1.3% for the week, which was shortened by the Labor Day holiday.
