QB Mason Mims leads Oxford past Shades Valley

Oxford quarterback Mason Mims had a hot hand in Friday’s 42-13 victory over Shades Valley.

Mims completed all nine of his passes in the first half, including three touchdown passes in the final four minutes before halftime. D.K. Wilson also scored delivered two long touchdown runs in the first quarter for the Yellow Jackets (3-0 overall, 1-0 in Class 6A, Region 6).

The Yellow Jackets wasted no time against the Mounties, needing just three plays to go 58 yards on the first drive of the night at Frank Nix Athletic Complex in Irondale.

“Everybody just balled out,” Mims said. “We did our jobs and were able to execute the gameplan. We just want to start fast and keep playing fast.”

Stars of the game: Mims connected on his first 11 passes and finished 16-of-23 for 178 yards and TD passes of 19 yards to Nick Hampton, 27 yards to CAmare Hampton and 23 yards to D.K. Wilson. Keenan Britt – the younger brother of former Auburn standout now playing for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Bucs – led the defense with 12 tackles and a sack.

Stat sheet: Shades Valley’s David Ware logged 28 carries for 171 yards. Shades Valley’s J’quez Daniel caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Steve Brown in the fist half, and Jaydon Thomas scored on a 24-yard run in the fourth quarter. … Wilson scored on runs of 51 and 42 yards and caught a 23-yard TD pass from Mims.

Coachspeak: “Offensively, we played pretty efficiently. “We had five touchdowns in 20-something snaps (in the first half) so we were able to execute our plays. Defensively, we made them work to drive the ball. We didn’t give up big plays and that was what we wanted. We wanted to control the game from the beginning, and we did.” – Oxford coach SamAdams

What’s next?: Oxford plays at home against Huffman next week. Shades Valley (1-2, 0-1) is off before playing at Huffman on Sept. 22.
