Mary G. Montgomery takes early lead, whips Foley

Mary G. Montgomery took control early, forced four turnovers and fed Troy Flowers for 127 yards on 16 carries as the No. 8 Vikings throttled No. 9 Foley 28-7 Friday night.

In the first game between ranked teams at Grider Stadium, the Vikings (3-0, 1-0 7A Region 1) took a 14-0 first-quarter lead on Jared Hollins’ touchdown passes of 35 yards to tight end Kaden Harrell and 30 yards to receiver James Bolton.

After that, MGM’s defense clamped down on Lions five-star receiver Perry Thompson and Kolton Nero, the state’s leading rusher. Thompson was held to minus 1 yard on three catches and Nero, who had run for 555 yards in the first two games, had 119 on 21 carries against the Vikings but 48 came on one run.

MGM broke the game open late in the first half as Devin Pettway’s 43-yard interception return made it 21-0 and Anthony Cassino’s interception on the next series set up Hollins’ 2-yard TD run.
