Former Tide standout leaves Birmingham in G League deal

Former Alabama standout John Petty Jr. changed teams in an NBA G League trade on Friday.

The Birmingham Squadron announced they had traded the returning-player rights to the guard to the Greensboro Swarm for the returning-player rights to guard Jalen Crutcher. The Swarm also received a first-round choice in the 2024 NBA G League Draft.

In his two seasons with Birmingham, Petty averaged 7.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 89 games.

Crutcher averaged 15.8 points, 5.1 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 87 games with the Swarm after entering the G League from Dayton, where he was an All-Atlantic 10 selection in his final two seasons with the Flyers.

Birmingham is the G League affiliate of the New Orleans Pelicans, and Petty went to training camp with the NBA team last year. Greensboro is the G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets.

A four-time first-team All-State selection, Petty played on AHSAA Class 5A championship teams at the Huntsville high schools J.O. Johnson in 2015 and 2016 and Mae Jemison in 2017 and won the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Mr. Basketball honor in 2016 and 2017.

In 131 games over four seasons with Alabama, Petty averaged 11.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists. He received All-SEC second-team recognition in the 2019-20 season and All-SEC first-team recognition in the 2020-21 campaign.

Birmingham announced its 2023-24 Showcase Cup and regular-season schedules on Tuesday. The Squadron will tip off against the Austin Spurs on Nov. 10 at Legacy Arena in Birmingham.
