Week 2 Cunningham Bounds Coastal Player of the Week decided

Davidson quarterback DJ Butler earned Cunningham Bounds Coastal Alabama Player of the Week honors for Week 2 in a tight contest decided by fewer than 900 votes.

Butler, who ran for four touchdowns and passed for another in the Warriors 59-46 win over Hillcrest-Evergreen last week, picked up 2,405 of the 10,578 votes cast – 23 percent.

The junior running back rushed for 229 yards on 19 carries in the season-opening win that was also the first game in the new Warrior Stadium.

Randal Barfoot, a junior quarterback for Satsuma, finished second in the voting. He picked up 1,569 votes – 15 percent – after completing 11-of-18 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-22 win over Cottage Hill. Barfoot also scored the game-winning TD on a 3-yard run.

Faith Academy’s Ty Goodwill caught a TD pass, intercepted three passes and blocked a field-goal attempt in the Rams’ 44-13 win at Elberta. Goodwill finished third in the balloting with 1,325 votes – 13 percent.

Voting for the Cunningham Bounds Coastal Alabama Football Player of the Week opens on Sundays during the season and runs through Wednesday. Nominees are determined from statistics submitted by coaches or official team statisticians before noon each Saturday.

In Week 2, more than 91,000 votes were cast across the three AL.com player of the week polls.
