Bryce Young on Jalen Milroe: ‘Super excited for him’

Twenty-one Alabama games have featured one player who was responsible for at least five touchdowns. In five of those games, that player was quarterback Bryce Young before he left the Crimson Tide as the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

In Alabama’s season-opening 56-7 victory over Middle Tennessee on Saturday, current Tide QB Jalen Milroe joined the list, and Young was not surprised.

“J-Mil balled out,” Young said on Wednesday afternoon during his press conference before his NFL debut on Sunday. “I’ve been able to watch him grow and just continue to get better in all aspects from being on the field to off the field. His understanding of the game and of the offense, his command and then everything on the field, he continues to grow.

“That’s my guy, that’s my brother, so I’m super excited for him. It was really great to see the success he had. He’s a great player, and it shows on the field. But he’s also a great person, great dude. Again, I’ve been able to see him progress behind the scenes for years now, and there’s nothing surprising about what he did, and I’m super excited for him.”

Milroe completed 13-of-18 passes for 194 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions and ran for 48 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries against Middle Tennessee.

Milroe became the first Alabama player with three touchdown passes and two touchdown runs in the same game.

Young’s five five-touchdown games all featured five TD passes.

The quarterbacks were Crimson Tide teammates for two seasons and went back-to-back in five-touchdown games as Young threw five TD passes in the final game of the 2022 season when Alabama defeated Kansas State 45-20 in the Sugar Bowl on Dec. 31.

The 2021 Heisman Trophy winner, Young is preparing to play again on Sunday, when he’ll lead the Carolina Panthers against the Atlanta Falcons at noon CDT at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta as the starting quarterback in his NFL debut.

Milroe will be back in action at 6 p.m. Saturday, when Alabama squares off against Texas at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
