Man shot in chest inside east Birmingham apartment

A man was rushed to UAB Hospital after a shooting at an east Birmingham apartment complex.

The alleged shooter called Birmingham’s 911 about 11 a.m. Wednesday to report the shooting, according to police radio communications. The caller told dispatchers the gun was in the living room.

East Precinct officers arrived at Somerset at Trussville apartments on Mary Taylor Road to find the male victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. His injuries were initially considered to be life-threatening, but Officer Truman Fitzgerald said he is now expected to be OK.

Fitzgerald said the shooter and his girlfriend live at the apartment. An dispute arose between the boyfriend and a male friend of the girlfriend, and that dispute turned physical before a shot was fired.

The shooter remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
