Alabama high school football player dies wrecking vehicle during police chase

An Alabama high school football player died early Monday morning when he wrecked his vehicle as police pursued him through two north Alabama counties while attempting a traffic stop.

Decatur police attempted to stop 16-year-old Jaiden DeJarnett in the city on Monday, with the pursuit stretching into Lawrence County, said Scott Norwood, the county coroner.

Jaiden died after wrecking his vehicle on Lawrence County Road 270 in Courtland, said Norwood.

The 16-year-old was a student at Sparkman High School in Harvest, where he was a member of the football team, the Decatur Daily reported.

Police tried to stop a Mazda four-door sedan Jaiden was driving near Beltline Road Southwest and Danville Road around 2:40 a.m. Monday for a traffic violation, according to the Daily.

“The driver failed to stop and led officers on a pursuit into Lawrence County,” Decatur police said in a statement, according to the paper. “During the pursuit, the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree. The driver was pronounced deceased on scene.”
