Exhibition driving operation in west Birmingham lands 3 in jail
Three people were arrested over the holiday weekend following an exhibition driving operation in west Birmingham.
The operation focused on the Third Avenue West area and was carried out by the Birmingham Police Department’s Crime Suppression Team, the Citywide Task Force and narcotic investigators.
About 10:45 p.m. Saturday, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald, officers received a report of exhibition driving in the 800 block of Third Avenue West.
Police observed a group of people flee from the area of the Advance Auto Parts parking lot
They then saw an abandoned 2017 grey Dodge Challenger and learned that vehicle had previously been reported stolen to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The Challenger was towed.
Roughly 10 minutes later, Fitzgerald said, officers arrested an adult male after he was found in the Advance Auto Parts parking lot after the business was closed. He was illegally in possession of a gun, authorities said.
His name has not been released but Fitzgerald said he was arrested on a charge of certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm and booked into the Birmingham City Jail. Formal warrants are pending.
His 1977 Cadillac Deville was impounded.
At 11:10 p.m. Saturday, officers arrested Travontae Todd, 26, of Hoover, on outstanding Birmingham warrants. He was taken into custody in the Burger King parking lot on Third Avenue West after officers made contact with spectators of exhibition driving.
On Sunday – about 2:25 a.m., officers arrested Demetrius Kelley, 31, of Bessemer, also on outstanding City of Birmingham warrants.
He was arrested at Burger King after he was found on the property while the business was closed. Officers impounded his 2020 Dodge Charger.
