Florida sheriff: Man allegedly kills teen with power tool and tells father, ‘I wouldn’t go in there’

A Florida man is charged with murder after investigators say he killed his 16-year-old son with a power tool, Polk County (Fla.) Sheriff Grad Judd said Monday.

According to Judd, deputies responded to a Lake Wales, Fla., home after receiving a call from a grandfather, identified as 67-year-old Stephen Rodda, who said his son, 37-year-old Stephen Thomas Rodda, had killed his son, 16-year-old Stphen Lee Rodda.

Judd said the grandfather told deputies he had left home to visit his wife, who was in a physical rehabilitation center, and returned around 11 a.m. Monday to find his son, Stephen Thomas Rodda, outside the home.

According to Judd, the grandfather told deputies his son warned him not to go inside the home.

“I wouldn’t go in there if I were you,” Judd quoted the grandfather. “I killed someone. You might want to call the police.”

Judd said when the grandfather went inside, he found his 16-year-old grandson dead in the kitchen dining area.

Investigators believe the teenager was killed with an angle grinder, a power tool which features a rotating blade which is typically used to cut, grind, polish and sharpen a variety of metals.

“There aren’t adequate words to describe how horrific this event is,” Judd said.

Stephen Thomas Rodda had only returned to the Lake Wales area about a month ago, Judd said, after spending time in Texas, Ohio, South Carolina and other locations. He had an active warrant out of South Carolina and investigators have also been told he has been a methamphetamine user since high school.

Judd called the teenager a “standup, stellar young man” who was living with his grandfather to assist him while his grandmother was in rehabilitation. He was scheduled to start work next week at a fast food restaurant to earn money to buy a car.

“To have this worthless individual murder his son is inconceivable,” Judd said, pointing at a mugshot of Stephen Thomas Rodda he held up for cameras.

Judd said Stephen Thomas Rodda fled the murder scene prior to deputies arrival, but was quickly located about a mile away and taken into custody.

No motive for the murder has been established.
