5 Coastal Alabama high school football games to watch in Week 3

Several matchups of ranked teams highlight this week’s Coastal Alabama high school football schedule.

Here are five games to watch in Week 3 along with the complete Coastal Schedule.

BAYSIDE ACADEMY (2-0) AT ST. MICHAEL (1-1)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Thursday, Volanta Park, Fairhope

Last week: Bayside defeated Pike Liberal Arts 38-6; St. Michael defeated Chickasaw 49-18.

Region records: 1st 4A, Region 1 record for both teams

The skinny: Class 4A, Region 1 opener for both teams. Bayside has won all three previous games with St. Michael, including a tense, 17-14 victory a year ago in Daphne. … The Admirals, under first-year coach Barrett Trotter, have outscored their first two opponents (Elberta and Pike Liberal Arts) by a combined score of 71-13. Teague Broadhead scored twice last week as Bayside ran for 214 yards. Tait Moore and Caid Lyons also had touchdowns. Senior DB Drew Murphy intercepted three passes, returning one for a touchdown. … St. Michael freshman QB Gunner Rivers went 29-of-41 last week for 378 yards and 6 TDs. He also had a rushing score. Tucker Tomlinson caught 10 passes for 188 yards and a score. Nick Russo had a pair of scores. Former NFL QB Philip Rivers is 12-9 in his third year as head coach of the Cardinals.

DAVIDSON (1-0) AT BAKER (2-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Hornet Stadium, Mobile

Last week: Davidson defeated Hillcrest-Evergreen 59-46; Baker defeated Wetumpka 33-17.

Region records: 1st 7A, Region 1 game for both teams

The skinny: Davidson leads the overall series 33-10, but Baker has won the last four meetings. The Hornets have averaged 42 points in those games. They won 41-16 a year ago. … Last week, Coastal Carolina commit DJ Butler ran for 4 TDs and passed for another as Davidson opened its on-campus stadium by scoring 59 points against Hillcrest. He finished with 265 all-purpose yards, including 229 yards rushing on 19 carries. QB Hudson Spivey threw a pair of TD passes as Davidson finished with 21 first downs and 403 yards of total offense. … Baker turned to its running game on a wet field against Wetumpka. Roderick Taylor ran for 188 yards and 3 TDs. Mississippi State commit Josh Flowers had a TD run. Leland Normand (8 solo tackles, 9 assists, 1 TFL) and Tristan Knight (6 tackles, 2 TFL, 2 QB pressures) led the defense. … Baker hasn’t started a season 3-0 since 2014. The last time Davidson won its first two games was 2013, and that included a forfeit victory over Vigor. The last time the Warriors started 2-0 on the field was 2012.

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Grider Field, Semmes

Last week: Foley defeated Baldwin County 37-24; MGM defeated Charles Henderson 19-7.

Region records: 1st 7A, Region 1 game for both teams

The skinny: Foley leads the overall series 24-6 and has won four straight, two of which went to overtime. The Lions won 43-42 in OT last year in Foley. … Foley is averaging 41 points a game in its two wins. Last week, Kolton Nero rushed for 271 yards and 4 TDs in the win over Baldwin County. Auburn WR commit Perry Thompson caught four passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. QB Nelson Thompson went 10-of-19 for 149 yards and a score. Deric Scott is 16-16 in his fourth year as Foley’s head coach. … MGM is 2-0 for the first time since 2007. The Vikings started 4-0 that year but lost their final six games. Last week, South Alabama QB commit Jared Hollins scored on two short TD runs and threw a 33-yard TD pass to James Bolton as the Vikings won at Charles Henderson. Hollins was 16-of-20 for 209 yards in the win. Bolton had six receptions for 77 yards. For the season, Hollins is 25-of-31 for 521 yards and 3 TDs. He also has four rushing scores. … Former Daphne and McGill OC Zach Golson is 8-5 in his second season as the Vikings head coach.

GULF SHORES (2-0) AT FAITH ACADEMY (2-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Ram Field, Mobile

Last week: Gulf Shores defeated Citronelle 31-0; Faith Academy defeated Elberta 44-13.

Region record: Both teams 1-0 in Class 5A, Region 1

The skinny: The two teams split two meetings a year ago. Gulf Shores won 22-12 during the regular season. Faith Academy won 20-14 in the Class 5A quarterfinals. Both were played in Gulf Shores. … Last week, Kolin Wilson ran for 124 yards on 15 carries for the Dolphins. N.C. State commit Ronnie Royal ran for 62 yards on seven carries. Braden Jackson had a TD reception and a Pick-6. Jud Harris (5-of-7, 75 yards, TD) and Alex Rippy (3-of-6, 9 yards) continue to alternate at QB. Former college coach Mark Hudspeth is 19-6 in his third season at Gulf Shores. … In Faith’s win last week, senior QB Jarrett Daughtry went 11-of-15 for 201 yards and three touchdowns. Ty Goodwill caught a TD pass and had three interceptions and a blocked field goal attempt. Tyrell Dotson scored on a 45-yard TD run and caught three passes for 99 yards and a pair of touchdowns. EJ King ran for 128 yards and a pair of touchdowns on eight carries. … Jack French is 49-16 in his sixth year at Faith and 308-136-2 in four decades as a head coach overall.

ST. PAUL’S (2-0) AT SARALAND (2-0)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Spartan Stadium, Saraland

Last week: St. Paul’s defeated McGill-Toolen 14-6; Saraland defeated Murphy 54-6.

Region records: Both teams are 1-0 in Class 6A, 1.

The skinny: Saraland has won all four previous meetings with St. Paul’s, including a 42-12 victory a year ago. … Anthony Frazier scored both of St. Paul’s TDs last week on a 14-yard run and a blocked punt scoop-and-score. He finished with 97 yards rushing on 27 carries. The Saints have scored just 14 points in each of their two wins but have given up just one touchdown total to UMS and McGill. … Saraland, on the other hand, has scored 85 points in wins over Lipscomb (Tenn.) Academy and Murphy. Santae McWilliams ran for four first-half touchdowns last week. He finished with 99 yards on just nine carries. Deshawn Spencer added 89 yards on five carries and a score, and Texas quarterback commit KJ Lacey finished the night 7-for-11 passing for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Reigning Mr. Football and Alabama WR commit Ryan Williams had just two catches for 44 yards.
