Jax State rumbles to 49-3 win over East Tennessee State
Logan Smothers ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as Jacksonville State rolled past East Tennessee State on Saturday at Burgess-Snow Stadium.
The victory lifts the Gamecocks to 2-0 this season, their first as an FBS program. JSU beat UTEP 17-14 in Week Zero action last Saturday.
Smothers started under center on Saturday, a week after playing only one series behind Zion Webb. The Nebraska transfer threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Galban in the first quarter, giving the Gamecocks a lead they would not relinquish.
Smothers, a Muscle Shoals native, later added touchdown runs of 2 and 3 yards. He completed 13 of 17 passes for 127 yards, and also ran for 32 yards on seven attempts.
Webb played just three snaps on Saturday, going 0-for-1 passing. He entered the game midway through the second quarter with JSU up 14-3, but Smother came back in on the fourth play of what would ultimately be a touchdown drive.
Redshirt freshman Te’Sean Smoot played most of the fourth quarter at quarterback with the Gamecocks up big. He did not attempt a pass, but rushed for 18 yards on four carries.
Malik Jackson led JSU on the ground with 100 yards on 12 carries, including a 42-yard touchdown just after halftime that gave the Gamecocks a 28-3 lead. Ron Wiggins added 58 yards and a 10-yard touchdown, while J’Wan Evans ran for a pair of 2-yard touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Ewan Johnson’s 27-yard field goal in the first quarter accounted for the only points of the game for ETSU, which falls to 0-1. The Gamecocks held the Bucs — an FCS program — to just 204 yards of total offense.
Jalen Bustamante and Kekoura Tarnue both had interceptions for Jax State, while Cam Williams, Jibreel Al-Amin and Curley Young all recorded sacks. East Tennessee State went just 1-for-11 on third down.
Jax State hits the road for the first time next Saturday, traveling to Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m.
