Vigor christens new stadium with 26-18 win over B.C. Rain
Jerrian Graham ‘s 45-yard touchdown pass to Gerritt Holcombe with 3:16 to play proved to be the game-winner as Vigor unveiled its shiny new Wolfpack Stadium with a come-from-behind 26-18 win over B.C. Rain in 5A, Region 1 play Friday night.
The Red Raiders led 18-12 with 8:50 to go in the game and were bleeding the clock behind punishing runs from Bryce Dowdlan before Vigor (2-0, 1-0 in 5A Region 1) stopped them on fourth-and-9 at the Wolfpack 31 and took over with just 4:10 to play.
Three plays and a couple of first downs later, the Wolves were in business at the Rain 45. Graham rolled to his right to avoid the rush and found the streaking Holcombe, who made an adjustment to the ball at the 5 and pranced into the right corner of the end zone ahead of two Red Raiders defenders.
Kelvin Brisker’s PAT was good, the first by either team all night, to put the Wolves up 19-18.
They held Rain (1-1, 0-1) on the next possession and got the ball back with 2:15 left, but couldn’t move it and punted to the Red Raiders’ 5 with only 55 seconds left in the game.
Brandon Purifoy’s pick-6 and Brisker’s second PAT abruptly ended things.
Play was halted with just 7 seconds left when the lights went out. After about a 10-minute delay, they came back on and time ran out.
Rain’s scores came on quarterback Amari Yelding’s 4-yard TD run, and TD passes of 2 and 13 yards to Dowdlan, who battled through cramps for most of three quarters.
Vigor’s other scores came on Carlos Benjamin runs of 4 and 24 yards.
— Play of the game: Unquestionably, Graham’s toss to Holcombe and Brisker’s go-ahead PAT not only stole the show but the game away from the Red Raiders, who took it to Vigor most of the night.
–By the numbers: 94: Combined total passing yards by Vigor’s two-headed quarterback tandem of Graham and Brisker; 97: Yards on the ground from Dowdlan; 19: First downs by Rain; 60: Total Vigor penalty yards.
— Game ball: Brisker for his game-winning PAT when the Wolves had to have it.
—They said it: “Anything that could go wrong seemed like it did. We get stopped on fourth down, stopped on the 1. Things that normally don’t happen to us were happening. But I preach to my kids every day about adversity. I’m just glad to get out of here with a win.” — Vigor coach Markus Cook
“Five plays, that was the difference in this game. I’ll go back and review the tape, but five plays cost us the game.” — B.C. Rain coach Lawrence Yelding
— Next week: Vigor continues region play as Citronelle comes calling, while the Red Raiders have the week off before hosting Region 1 foe Faith Academy on Sept. 15.
