Alabama football: Nick Saban gives pair of injury updates before Week 1

Nick Saban provided two injury updates regarding Alabama football underclassmen on Thursday night, stating one has returned to practice and another has been out.

Sophomore Jihaad Campbell is “doubtful” for this Saturday’s game against Middle Tennessee State. The inside linebacker had an operation on his knee, according to Saban, and will “probably be able” to make his season debut on Sept. 9 against Texas.

“Jihaad Campbell has shown promise. He had to get his knee scoped about a week or 10 days ago so he’ll probably be doubtful for this game, possible for this game,” Saban said on the 2023 debut episode of “Hey Coach.”

Saban fielded questions from the audience and was asked about Alabama’s depth at certain positions. One caller inquired about the health of five-star Justice Haynes. Saban said on Aug. 19 Haynes had missed the second scrimmage because of a “quad contusion.” But the Georgia running back appears to have healed.

“(Haynes) probably missed three or four days,” Saban said. “…He’s been practicing. He’s good. He’s a fine young man and a really good player and one of the freshmen that will make a significant contribution, I think, to the team. And maybe that role will continue to increase as the season goes on but he’s doing really well.”

Alabama opens against the Blue Raiders with a 6:30 p.m. CST kickoff.
