Jaguars sign former Auburn defensive lineman

Released by the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday, Angelo Blackson returned to the NFL on Thursday when the Jacksonville Jaguars signed the former Auburn defensive lineman.

Jacksonville placed defensive lineman DaVon Hamilton on injured reserve on Thursday with a “non-football-related medical issue” with his back. Hamilton will have to miss at least four games.

Blackson comes aboard with the Jaguars preparing to kick off their 2023 season on Sept. 10 with an AFC South game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Three other players with Alabama football roots joined NFL practice squads on Thursday after being waived on Tuesday:

· Cornerback Keenan Isaac (Midfield, Alabama State) signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

· Wide receiver Cephus Johnson III (Davidson, South Alabama) signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

· Wide receiver Montrell Washington (Samford) signed with the Kansas City Chiefs

Isaac and Johnson are undrafted rookies who played in the preseason for Tampa Bay. Washington played in 15 games as a rookie for the Denver Broncos last season, when he returned 32 punts and 18 kickoffs.

Two former Alabama high school players lost their NFL roster positions on Thursday when they were waived off injured reserve with injury settlements — cornerback Zyon Gilbert (Jeff Davis) from the New York Giants and offensive lineman Lachavious Simmons (Selma) from the Arizona Cardinals.

Blackson played in 15 games, with four starts, for the Chicago Bears last season. He signed as a free agent with the Ravens in May. Baltimore released him as it reduced its preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players.

After four seasons at Auburn, Blackson entered the NFL as a fourth-round selection of the Tennessee Titans in the 2015 draft. After two seasons with the Titans, Blackson was on the New England Patriots’ practice squad when the Houston Texans signed him for the final nine games of the 2017 season.

Released by the Texans at the end of training camp even though he’d started 15 regular-season games and two playoff contests in 2019, Blackson signed with the Arizona Cardinals five days before the 2020 season kicked off. He still played in every Arizona game and made nine starts.

Blackson signed a two-year, $5.5 million contract with Chicago in 2021 as a free agent.

Blackson played 55 percent of the Bears’ defensive snaps in 2021 and 41 percent in 2022. In his two seasons with Chicago, Blackson appeared in 32 games with 12 starts. He recorded 65 tackles, 2.5 sacks, four tackles for loss and 10 quarterback hits.
