David Pumpkins returns: Tom Hanks reprises beloved ‘SNL’ Halloween character
No one can explain David Pumpkins, the mysterious Halloween character who debuted on “Saturday Night Live” back in 2016, but we love him. And excuse, we mean David S. Pumpkins.
Tom Hanks reprised the instant “SNL” favorite during a cameo appearance on this week’s episode, hosted by pop star Jack Harlow.
Hanks had previously dropped in for a quick line during an “AA Meeting” sketch before he put on the pumpkin suit again, drawing huge cheers from the live studio audience.
The first time Hanks played Pumpkins, the crowd didn’t know what to do with it, as they built the character’s bizarre and limited mythology during a haunted elevator ride. But the original sketch now has 23 million views on YouTube, and David S. Pumpkins has become a Halloween fixture (and a popular costume, if you can find the suit and curly wig).
Mikey Day and former cast member Bobby Moynihan returned as the dancing skeletons flanking Pumpkins during the ride.
Along with the characters in the sketch, we knew very little about Pumpkins after his debut, but against all odds, this time we found out he was born in Ibiza, Spain, though not necessarily raised there.
Any questions?
