No deal on Jaylen Waddle, Miami Dolphins GM says
Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier would not confirm reports that in trade discussions about unhappy Indianapolis running back Jonathan Taylor, the Colts wanted wide receiver Jaylen Waddle in return.
But if Indianapolis or any other NFL team has hopes of obtaining Waddle, the answer will always be “No,” Grier said.

“Jaylen Waddle would not be available to anybody,” Grier said on Wednesday. “It wouldn’t matter who they called about.”
The sixth player picked in the 2021 draft, Waddle set a league rookie record for receptions with 104 for 1,015 yards and six touchdowns. Last season, Waddle had 75 receptions for 1,356 yards and eight touchdowns.
Only three other players have had as many receptions, receiving yards and TD receptions as Waddle has in their first two NFL seasons – Odell Beckham Jr., Justin Jefferson and Michael Thomas.
Taylor and the Colts have been at odds about his contract. He has one season remaining on his four-year rookie contract, but Taylor wanted to get a long-term extension done this offseason. Indianapolis didn’t comply. After failing to trade Taylor as the preseason came to a close, Indianapolis put him on reserve/physically unable to perform on Tuesday because of his lack of practice, and he’ll have to miss at least the first four games of the season.
“(Colts general manager) Chris (Ballard) is a friend of mine,” Grier said. “We’ve had conversations. And again, it was a lot of exploratory talks. I can say there was no exchange of offers from either one of us. It was just general talks, so a lot of the stuff reported, I could tell you guys that 95 percent of it’s wrong. So we’ve had some discussions, but it’s no different than any player that’s ever released or available that we know about and have a discussion with the GM about it. Chris was very professional as he always is, and so in terms of being close or anything, there was nothing really close.”
Waddle sustained what has been described as a midsection injury during training camp and has missed two weeks of practice. The former Alabama wide receiver said on Tuesday that he expects to be ready when the Dolphins open the 2023 NFL regular season on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 10.
“It’s always the expectation to go out and play,” Waddle said. “… I’m feeling good. Me and the medical staff talked, and they’re doing a good job monitoring me and doing stuff like that. But feeling good.”
