2 lanes open on Interstate 85 in Montgomery after fiery crash

The Alabama Department of Transportation says two lanes of traffic have been reopened following Tuesday’s fiery crash at the South Perry Street bridge in Montgomery.

Workers completed emergency repairs to the bridge at about 10 a.m. today. Crews installed reinforcements to the bridge, which remains closed and should not be used by pedestrians or vehicles until permanent repairs can be made.

Plans for permanent repairs are being finalized and more information will be provided as soon as available, ALDOT said.

The crash, which took place about 7:25 a.m. Tuesday, involved an 18-wheeler and three other vehicles.

The 18-wheeler, which was carrying a load of lumber, collided with the support columns holding up the South Perry Street bridge.

The crash set the load of wood alight. The impact, coupled with the intense heat from the fire, caused major damage to the South Perry Street Bridge and its support, causing the closure of the southbound highway and the overhead bridge.

At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Montgomery Police Chief Daryl Albert said the driver of the vehicle, Eldon Abram, received minor injuries.

The 18-wheeler was burned and destroyed.

Motorists are being asked to watch out for people and equipment in the area as ALDOT crews and contractors continue assessments and repairs.
