12 Alabama alumni cut by NFL teams on Tuesday

Wide receiver Cam Sims has been a survivor in the NFL. After catching 41 passes in four seasons at Alabama, he overcame the odds to make Washington’s regular-season roster as an undrafted rookie in 2018, then sustained a season-ending injury on the opening kickoff of his first contest.

Sims got waived three times by Washington, but he ended up playing for four more seasons, making 57 receptions for 804 yards and three touchdowns.

But Sims hit another setback on Tuesday, when he was released by the Las Vegas Raiders, who had signed him as a free agent in the offseason.

Two other Alabama alumni were released on Tuesday and nine more were waived as NFL teams reduced their 90-player preseason rosters to the regular-season limit of 53. The former Crimson Tide players who were let go on Tuesday included:

· Outside linebacker Christopher Allen was waived with an injury designation by the Denver Broncos. If Allen is not claimed by another team by the 11 a.m. CDT Wednesday deadline, he will revert to Denver’s injured reserve and will not be able to play for the Broncos in the 2023 season. A foot injury kept Allen off the field as a rookie as he spent 2022 on injured reserve. He has a groin injury his year.

· Wide receiver Slade Bolden was waived by the Atlanta Falcons.

· Guard Deonte Brown (Austin) was waived by the Carolina Panthers. A sixth-round draft pick in 2021, Brown has been on the Panthers’ practice squad for two seasons and played in three games last year.

· Defensive back Shyheim Carter was waived by the Tennessee Titans. Tuesday marked the eighth time that Carter has been waived or released by an NFL team since entering the league in 2020.

· Defensive tackle DJ Dale (Clay-Chalkville) was waived by the Buffalo Bills. Dale was an undrafted rookie.

· Running back Derrick Gore was waived by the Washington Commanders. Gore has played in 11 NFL regular-season games.

· Defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand was released by the Miami Dolphins. A fourth-round draft choice and NFL All-Rookie selection in 2018, Hand has played in only 18 games in the four seasons since because of injuries.

· Safety Ronnie Harrison was released by the Indianapolis Colts. A third-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, Harrison has played in 67 regular-season games, with 45 starts.

· Linebacker Jaylen Moody was waived by the Cincinnati Bengals. Moody was an undrafted rookie.

· Offensive lineman Kendall Randolph (Bob Jones) was waived by the Seattle Seahawks. Randolph was an undrafted rookie.

· Wide receiver Tyrell Shavers was waived by the Buffalo Bills. Shavers was an undrafted rookie.

Also coming off the active rosters of their teams on Tuesday were Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams and Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Cam Robinson. They went on reserve/suspended by the commissioner. Williams will miss the first six games of the 2023 season for violating the league’s gambling rules. Robinson will miss the first four games for violating the NFL Policy on Performance-Enhancing Substances.

Also going on reserve lists were San Francisco 49ers tight end Cameron Latu and New York Giants cornerback Aaron Robinson. Latu is on reserve/injured, and Robinson is on reserve/physically able to perform.

Latu sustained a knee injury in the preseason finale. By going on IR now, he will not be able to play for the 49ers during the 2023 season.

Robinson sustained a knee injury during the 2022 season and had not practiced with the Giants in training camp or the preseason. His assignment to the PUP list means Robinson must miss at least the first four games of the 2023 season. But he will be able to return if he gets healthy.
