Deion Sanders refuses to claim Florida State as his school

According to Deion Sanders, he isn’t a Seminole.

That may come as a surprise to most college football fans as “Coach Prime” electrified as a defensive back and return specialist at Florida State in the 1980s.

Sanders, now the coach at Colorado, was asked about this weekend’s Florida State-Miami rivalry by a reporter who claimed to be a Hurricane asking a Seminole a question. Sanders corrected her.

“No, no, no,” he said. “Do you know where I graduated from? … I graduated from an HBCU. I thought it was from where you graduated from, isn’t it? Why do you keep calling me that if it wasn’t where I graduated from? I’m an HBCU grad.”

For the record, Sanders, who had his No. 2 FSU jersey retired, earned a degree from Talladega College in Alabama.

Sanders, who won the Jim Thorpe Award for best defensive back in the country, spent four seasons playing football at Florida State where he was a two-time Consensus All-American during the 1987 and 1988 seasons.

Colorado was the talk of the offseason after hiring Sanders.

The former NFL star made some noise while coaching at Jackson State and has Boulder buzzing after the Buffaloes went 1-11 a year ago. Sanders overhauled the roster, raiding the transfer portal to add nearly 90 new players to the program in hopes of a fast start.
