Hurricane names: 2023 Hereâs what comes after Idalia; what names have been retired?
Idalia, the storm set to hit Florida’s Gulf Coast as a major hurricane, is the ninth named Atlantic storm of the 2023 season, according to the National Hurricane Center.
It was proceeded by Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert and Harold. Idalia will be followed by Jose, Katia, Lee, Margot, Nigel, Ophelia, Philippe, Rina, Sean, Tammy, Vince and Whitney.
Hurricane names are used in rotation and are recycled every six years, meaning the 2023 list will be used again in 2029. If a storm is so deadly or costly, however, it is dropped from the list and replaced with a new one.
2024′s list is Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Francine, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Milton, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sara, Tony, Valerie and William.
