Hurricane Idalia cancels IMG Academy vs. Thompson game

Thompson’s game with national power IMG Academy on Thursday in Alabaster has been canceled due to Hurricane Idalia.

The hurricane, expected to make landfall somewhere on Florida’s Big Bend region Wednesday morning, could have a drastic affect on IMG’s travel plans. IMG is located in Bradenton, Fla.

Idalia was a Category 1 hurricane on Tuesday and is expected to strengthen to a Category 3 storm with winds up to 120 mph in the next 24 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center.

According to an email from Thompson athletic director Vincent Pitts, the Warriors and IMG made the joint decision to cancel the game in the interest of the safety of IMG players, employees and their families with travel expected to be limited in and out of the Tampa area in the coming days.

Pitts’ email stated that a rescheduled game between the two is unlikely this year with a tight schedule for each team.

Thompson, the four-time reigning Class 7A state champions, opened its season with a win over Opelika in the AHSAA Kickoff Classic in Montgomery last week. The Warriors will open Class 7A, Region 3 play by hosting rival Vestavia Hills on Sept. 8.

IMG is 2-0 after wins over Lipscomb (Tenn.) Academy and St. Joseph’s Prep (Philadelphia, Pa.). IMG is scheduled to travel to Indianapolis to play Ben Davis (Ind.) on Sept. 8.
