Gunfire erupted in a University Boulevard intersection early Sunday, sending two men to the hospital.

Birmingham police and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched at 2:16 a.m. to the VA Hospital at University Boulevard and 19th Street on a report of a car crashing into the building.

UAB police officers heard the shots and then found the red Corvette has slammed into the hospital, shattering a window and damaging the brick.

The car had been struck by at least a dozen bullets, most of them on the passenger’s side. The passenger was shot multiple times and taken to UAB Hospital with critical injuries.

The driver also was shot, but his injuries didn’t initially appear to be life-threatening.

Investigators found shell casings in the intersection from both a handgun and rifle. It wasn’t immediately clear if multiple people were shooting at the Corvette or if there was an exchange of gunfire.

The Corvette hit at least one parking meter and a sign before it traveled on the sidewalk and struck the building. The sign toppled, causing damage to the truck of a VA employee.
