Gun at Hueytown, Ramsay game âtotally unacceptable,â Jefferson County superintendent says
Carrying a handgun to a high school football game as a Jefferson County teen did Friday night is “totally unacceptable” and has “no place” in school events, schools Superintendent Dr. Walter Gonsoulin said Saturday.
Gonsoulin was responding to a teen with a handgun taken into custody at the Hueytown High School vs. Ramsay High School football game. No one was shot and Gonsoulin said the system expects to release more information on the incident Monday.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief David Agee said earlier that school resource officers assigned to the game saw a disturbance in the Hueytown stands and went to intervene. A 16-year-old boy with a handgun was stopped trying to run by school staff and deputies.
As the teen suspect tried to elude law enforcement officers in the home-side bleachers, Hueytown assistant coach Chandler Byram sprang into action.
“As soon as an officer from Jefferson County pulled out his taser, the guy tried to make a B-line up the stairs to the pressbox,” Byram said. “I’m in the pressbox and as soon as he came around corner, I opened the door and tackled him to the ground until the cops got up there.”
The disturbance delayed the game at Hueytown High with about four minutes to go in the third quarter. The teen was taken to juvenile detention.
Here is Gonsoulin’s full statement: “We are currently reviewing what happened at the Hueytown football game Friday night and expect to release more information on Monday. However, for now, let me say this type of behavior is totally unacceptable. It has no place in Jefferson County Schools. I am very grateful that there were no injuries.”
