Former UAB standout ready to play for Carolina Panthers

Former UAB running back Spencer Brown is in line to make his first appearance of the 2022 NFL season on Sunday with the Carolina Panthers.

With running back Chuba Hubbard unable to play against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday because of an ankle injury, the Panthers elevated Brown from their practice squad on Saturday.

Each NFL team can elevate two practice-squad members to the active roster for each game.

Two other players with Alabama football roots were elevated from practice squads to Sunday rosters on Saturday:

· The Los Angeles Rams elevated offensive lineman Chandler Brewer (Florence) for their game against the San Francisco 49ers. Brewer also was elevated for the Rams’ previous game, and he played four special-teams snaps in a 24-10 victory over Carolina.

· The New York Giants elevated safety Landon Collins (Alabama) for their game against the Seattle Seahawks. The former All-Pro made his 2022 debut as a practice-squad elevation last week, when he played 23 defensive snaps in a 23-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

A first-team All-State player at Mortimer Jordan in 2015, when the Blue Devils lost in the AHSAA Class 5A championship game 41-26 to St. Paul’s Episcopal and current New York Jets defensive end Bryce Huff, Brown ran for 1,329 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2017 and 1,227 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2018 for UAB.

As an undrafted free agent, Brown earned a spot on Carolina’s practice squad last season, when he played in one game. This season, the Panthers released Brown at the end of the preseason, but he rejoined the practice squad on Oct. 18.

“I’m just making sure I’m on top of everything, getting a couple of extra catches in,” Brown said this week. “I’m making sure everything’s squared away, just in case.”

Carolina traded former All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 20, then ran for 173 yards three days later in a 21-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. D’Onta Foreman had 118 yards on 15 carries, and Hubbard had 63 yards and one touchdown on nine carries.

Against the Falcons, Foreman will be backed up by Raheem Blackshear and Brown.
