Eras Tour security guard says he lost job after asking fans to take pictures of him with Taylor Swift
An Eras Tour security guard is claiming he lost his job after a viral video showed him asking fans to take pictures of him in front of Taylor Swift during her Minneapolis show in June.
Calvin Denker took to TikTok to share that security company Best Crowd Management had a “rule against taking photos with any of the performers,” but that the straw that broke the camel’s back was how he got those photos taken.
“The main issue that they had was with my follow-up video where I said I handed out pieces of paper to the people in front of me to ask to be sent any photos that I made my way into,” said Denker, who snagged the position in order to see Swift for free. He was not allowed to have his phone out during the show.
“The HR woman who called me wasn’t able to articulate exactly what I did wrong, because I didn’t do anything beyond asking for photos, which is what happens at any other concert,” he explained. “Every photo of me from that night was from behind the barricade like any other photo from a fan would be. I never took my own phone out. And above all else, I made sure that Taylor Swift was safe and all the fans had a good time. As long as I was at that concert, I was doing my job.”
After Denker was initially reprimanded, he offered to take down his videos, with the company saying they’d see if they could salvage his position. He said he didn’t hear back for over a month, during which time he was assigned to work more shows.
However, he was formally axed following a seven-hour shift at an Ed Sheeran concert earlier this month, he claimed.
Noting that he holds “no grudges against my employer,” Denker had only good things to say about Swift’s shows and asked people to not send “hate” toward the company.
“Security guard carried section A2!” TikTok user anmaloney captioned the initial video of Denker, which has so far racked up nearly 3 million views.
