Pro Football Hall of Fame panel rebuffs Maxie Baughan

The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Seniors Committee announced its three finalists for the Class of 2024 ballot on Wednesday, and former Bessemer High School standout Maxie Baughan was not among them.

Linebacker Randy Gradishar, defensive tackle Steve McMichael and wide receiver Art Powell will be considered for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in February after being advanced to the final stage of the selection process. The modern-era finalists and the Coach/Contributor Committee’s nominee, Buddy Parker, also will be voted on at that time.

Baughan, who died on Saturday night at age 85, was among the nine other players considered on Wednesday by the Seniors Committee who did not make the final three.

Senior candidates are players who have not played in at least 25 seasons.

The 20th pick in the 1960 NFL Draft, Baughan played his first six seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, spent the next five with the Los Angeles Rams and, after serving as the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, came back to play in two games as a player-coach for the Washington Redskins in 1974.

The Eagles won the NFL championship in Baughan’s first pro season in 1960, when he started every game and was chosen for the Pro Bowl.

Baughan earned a Pro Bowl invitation in nine of his first 10 NFL campaigns. He received first-team recognition at linebacker in The Associated Press’ All-Pro selections in 1964 and 1969 and was an AP second-team choice six other times.

Baughan already is in the College Football Hall of Fame, honored in 1988 for his career at Georgia Tech, where he was a consensus All-American in 1959.

Gradishar spent his entire 10-year career with the Denver Broncos. He was a first-team All-Pro selection twice and a Pro Bowl choice seven times. Gradishar won the AP Defensive Player of the Year Award in 1978.

McMichael played for the Chicago Bears in 13 of his 15 seasons, including their 1985 NFL championship team. He was a first-team All-Pro twice and Pro Bowl choice twice.

Powell was a standout in the early days of the AFL, making the all-league team in 1960 and 1963. He led the AFL in receiving yards in 1962 and 1963 and touchdown receptions in 1960 and 1963.
