âWe took strides:â Alabama football provides 2nd scrimmage takeaways
For Roydell Williams and Alabama’s running backs, last Saturday’s scrimmage allowed a chance to correct the “little errors.” Williams, a senior from Hueytown, said the showing in Bryant-Denny Stadium was another step in the right direction.
“We still have some things to work on, but I feel as an offensive unit we were very efficient, started off very, very strong. As a running back unit, we finished strong, finished our runs. Both lines did very, very well. Being able to communicate with those guys, and most important keep the quarterback clean,” Williams said on Tuesday.
The sentiment was shared by his head coach. Speaking with the media after he had walked off the field, Nick Saban noted the wide receivers had “improved” with fewer drops in the second scrimmage compared to the first. A switchup on the offensive line allowed for some more experience and stability on the left side of the line as well.
Cleaning up the pre-snap penalties and limiting the miscues was one of Saban’s desires following the first scrimmage on Aug. 12. But with room for growth came another three weeks of camp before Middle Tennessee is scheduled to open the season on Sept. 2.
Saban opened his comments last Saturday by explaining the players’ hard work had led to a “significant amount of improvement.” Redshirt senior defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe said the growth showed itself with the defensive line forcing a couple of fumbles and recovering a few.
“I think we did very good,” said Eboigbe. “We took strides from scrimmage one to scrimmage two. That’s all that you can hope (for),” Eboigbe said. ” … That’s what we want — create turnovers and get to the ball. Gang tackle — everybody arriving to the ball. That’s what our defense wants to be about.”
