49-year-old man dies after sustaining blunt force injury during arrest by Bessemer police

A Gardendale man died early Monday after he sustained a head injury during an arrest by Bessemer police officers earlier this month.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Larry Douglas Oden II. He was 49.

Authorities said Oden fled from Bessemer officers just before 7 p.m. on Aug. 4. The officers were conducting a property theft investigation.

When officers caught Oden, he sustained a blunt force injury to the head.

Oden was taken to UAB Medical West and later transferred to UAB Hospital in Bessemer, where he remained until he died at 12:40 a.m. today.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe into Oden’s death.
