Satsuma schools getting back to basics, superintendent says

Dr. Tim Guinn has served as superintendent of Satsuma City Schools since 2022. Prior to arriving at Satsuma, Guinn worked in school administration for more than 25 years, including in the Tuscumbia City Schools and the Russellville City School System. He also worked as a football and basketball coach.

Satsuma City Schools is entering its 13th year as a school system. There are two schools: Robert E. Lee Elementary School, which serves pre-kindergarten through 6th grade, and Satsuma High School, which serves 7th grade through 12th grade.

Here, Guinn discusses how the schools are working to shore up students’ math and English skills, as well as how much social media has negatively impacted students’ mental health.

Questions and answers have been condensed and edited for clarity.

Now that we’re at the start of the new school year, what are some of the initiatives that Satsuma is taking on to improve learning this year?
