Jarran Reed: âWeâre really lucky we got him backâ
On Saturday night, Jarran Reed played his first game for the Seattle Seahawks since Jan. 9, 2021.
Reed spent his first five NFL seasons with the Seahawks, then played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021 and the Green Bay Packers in 2022 before returning to Seattle in March via free agency.

In the Seahawks’ 22-14 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in an NFL preseason game on Saturday night, the former Alabama standout started at nose tackle. He capped his eight snaps on the field by sacking Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush for a 10-yard loss on a third-and-4 play. The sack pushed Dallas back to the Seahawks 44-yard line and caused the Cowboys to punt instead of trying a field goal.
After the game, Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Reed would “the steady force” for the Seahawks’ defensive line.
“We’re so fortunate that J. Reed came back to us,” Carroll said. “We really are. More than just the playing, he’s such a leader for us. He’s got a great mentality. He’s tough. He’s demanding of the young guys. He coaches them up. He’s assumed that role, that he’s kind of the statesman there. He ain’t that old, but he just has kind of assumed that posture with them, and he’s got a great kind of approach to it.
“He can play the three-technique, he can play the one-technique, we can move him around. It was great he got a sack. … He’s vying, trying to get on that nickel rush team and be part of that. We’re really lucky we got him back.”
Seattle originally obtained Reed in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft coming out of Alabama’s CFP national-championship season in 2015.
Reed has started the past 66 games that he’s played for the Seahawks. But while trying to rework Reed’s contract in 2021, Seattle lost him in free agency to the Chiefs. After starting every game for Kansas City, Reed moved in free agency again.
In 2022, Reed reached a career high with 52 tackles while recording 2.5 sacks, five tackles for loss, 14 quarterback hits, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries for Green Bay.
The Seahawks brought him back to Seattle with a two-year, $9 million contract that included a $3 million signing bonus and $4.19 million in guaranteed money.
During his career, Reed has 289 tackles, 27 sacks, 29 tackles for loss, 89 quarterback hits, seven pass breakups, six forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries in 106 regular-season games. In nine playoff games, Reed has registered three sacks.
