The heat dome returns: This may be hottest week of 2023
The hottest week of 2023 may be on the way for parts of Alabama.
The National Weather Service is forecasting multiple triple-digit high temperatures later this week as a heat dome sets up over the state.
The dome is actually a strong area of high pressure that will pump up temperatures through the Midwest and Southeast and tamp down rain chances through much of the week.
The National Weather Service is forecasting the hottest days this week to be Wednesday and Thursday. But the entire week will be very hot, according to forecasters.
Here is a look at the expected high temperatures over the next few days:

A break could come for some of the state — but not poor south Alabama — by next Sunday, when highs in north Alabama will fall back into the mid- to upper 80s. South Alabama is forecast to stay in the mid- to upper 90s, however.
Here’s a look at the heat advisories in effect for Alabama on Monday:
NORTH ALABAMA
* Heat advisory from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday for Lauderdale, Colbert and Franklin counties.
The National Weather Service said the heat index could climb as high as 107 degrees in those areas today.
CENTRAL ALABAMA
* Heat advisory from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday for Marion, Lamar, Fayette, Winston, Walker, Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Clay, Randolph, Sumter, Greene, Hale, Perry, Bibb, Chilton, Coosa, Tallapoosa, Chambers, Marengo, Dallas, Autauga, Lowndes, Elmore, Montgomery, Macon, Bullock, Lee, Russell, Pike and Barbour counties.
The National Weather Service said heat index values up to 109 degrees will be possible.
SOUTH ALABAMA
There were no heat advisories in effect for south Alabama as of Monday morning. However, highs will reach the mid- to upper 90s this afternoon, according to the weather service.
Expect to see heat advisories in the region in the next few days.
