Birmingham police fire shots at man shooting at other people; investigation underway
A Birmingham police officer fired shots at a man who was shooting at someone else Saturday night in west Birmingham.
No one was injured, and three people are in custody undergoing questioning, including the initial shooter.
The incident started around 9:30 p.m. when police responded to a report of shots fired in the 1100 block of Third Avenue West at Sharon’s Event Center. There was some type of party taking place at the time.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said officers with the Birmingham Police Department’s Citywide Traffic Task Force were patrolling the area and spotted an argument taking place in the road.
The officers stopped and then saw a man firing shots at a group of men.
“One of our officers discharged their firearm towards the shooter,’’ Fitzgerald said.
“Our officer took action to protect the lives of the men being shot at,’’ he said.
No one was injured in the initial shooting or the subsequent shooting by police.
While the State Bureau of Investigation is often called in to investigate officer-involved shootings, Fitzgerald said that typically does not happen when no one is injured.
Police cordoned off a couple of blocks in every direction surrounding the crime scene. The was a large police presence including Internal Affairs Investigators and Assistant Chief La’Quaylin Parhm Mack.
“We’re following our protocol when an officer has discharged a firearm,” Fitzgerald said.
“We had an officer discharge a firearm at a community member,’’ he said, “and we want to handle it as serious as we would if there was an officer involved shooting.”
