Ken Griffey Jr. becomes latest Alabama athletics guest speaker
The Kid stopped by Tuscaloosa this week. Alabama welcomed MLB Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. to address the Crimson Tide football and softball teams.
Griffey is the latest big name to make an appearance as the Tide’s social media accounts have hyped its guest speakers ahead of the 2023 college football season. Former standouts from this preseason include Pete Rose and Michael Strahan.
Griffey is a first-ballot Hall of Fame selection, 10-time Gold Glove winner, seven-time Silver Slugger and one-time Most Valuable Player. He’s made multiple appearances as a speaker since his 24-year career ended in 2010.
“I think it was good for our players to hear. They really enjoyed it. (Rose) had a great sense of humor, so. And (motivational speaker C.L. Shepherd) was all about being a man. I think some good things happened from that standpoint in helping our guys develop the right habits,” UA head football coach Nick Saban said of Rose’s talk last week.
Saban has made it a point to bring in guests to educate athletes on issues facing the sport or share a bit of their life experiences. In the past, boxers Mike Tyson, Deontay Wilder, NBA legend Kobe Bryant and more have stopped by.
