Pat Fitzgerald will be back on the sideline this fall, in a manner of speaking.

The former Northwestern football coach has been hired as a volunteer assistant at Loyola Academy near Chicago, according to the North Shore Record. Fitzgerald was fired by Northwestern July 10 after accusations of widespread hazing surfaced within his program.

Fitzgerald’s two younger sons, Ryan and Brendan, play football at Loyola, which is located in the Chicago suburb of Wilmette. His oldest son, Jack, is a freshman tight end at Northwestern.

According to the report, Fitzgerald passed a background check, underwent training and signed a code of conduct agreement in order to serve as a volunteer assistant coach at Loyola. He has denied any knowledge of or wrongdoing in the Northwestern hazing scandal.

Fitzgerald, a native of Midlothian, Ill., starred at Northwestern in the mid-1990s and joined the Wildcats’ staff as an assistant coach in 2001. He was elevated to head coach upon the sudden death of Randy Walker in 2006, and posted a 110-101 record in 17 seasons at the Big Ten school.

Northwestern installed defensive coordinator David Braun as interim coach after Fitzgerald was fired. The Wildcats open the season Sept. 3 at Rutgers.
