A U.S. Army soldier is charged with capital murder in the July shooting death of another man in Sylacauga.

Marquese Donnell Duncan, 22, of Childersburg, is charged in the July 2 slaying of 19-year-old Jason Anthony Swain Jr.

Sylacauga police were dispatched at 1 a.m. that Sunday on a shooting call at the corner of Virginia Avenue and Scrooge Alley, in the old Avondale Mill Village.

Police Chief Kelley Johnson said when officers arrived, they found Swain had been wounded, and bystanders were trying to help him.

Swain was taken by ambulance to Coosa Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.

According to Swain’s obituary, he attended B. B. Comer Memorial High School and was a member of the football team. After school, he would commute to C & J Tech where he was a “dedicated employee.”

Investigators developed Duncan as a suspect. Kelley said he can’t yet disclose a motive.

Authorities then made contact with the Criminal Investigation Division at Fort Campbell Army Base in Kentucky where Duncan was stationed.

Duncan was then turned over to the U.S. Marshals Service, who took him to the Christian County Jail in Kentucky on Aug. 3.

He was being returned to Alabama Tuesday and will be held without bond in the Talladega County Jail.
