Alabama football: Saban wants more offensive line depth, consistency
Alabama football’s offensive line has a solid group of returning starters. From JC Latham at right tackle, to Seth McLaughlin at center. The Tide also have younger players on the rise, including Tyler Booker at guard.
But it’s not enough at the moment. Head coach Nick Saban said Saturday after the team’s first scrimmage that he wants more from the group.
“Inconsistent, not enough depth,” Saban said of the offensive line. “We had a couple explosive runs but you know, when you’re playing against each other, was the explosive run because of great execution or was it because of terrible execution on the other side? Until you watch the film it’s kind of hard to evaluate.”
The top of the group is as good as it gets in college football. Latham was chosen as a preseason first-team all-SEC player at his position after a dominant 2022.
McLaughlin was named second-team all-conference. Booker will look to play a bigger role after making the SEC’s all-freshman team last season.
On the left side, there’s a battle at tackle with Elijah Pritchett and Kadyn Proctor both vying for reps. Still, once Alabama gets past that first group of players, Saban was concerned.
“I just think we need to get more guys in the offensive line to be able to play winning football and we need to add depth to the group,” he said after the scrimmage. “We have maybe six, seven guys that I think are in play but we need a lot more than that to get through the season.”
Alabama still has some time for more linemen to step up. The Crimson Tide are set to continue preseason camp through Aug. 26 before opening the season on Sept. 2 against Middle Tennessee State at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
