Offense starts fast, ends well in Jags’ first scrimmage
The record-breaking heat pushed South Alabama under the roof of the Jaguar Training Facility for Saturday’s first scrimmage of preseason camp, but the Jaguars’ offense adjusted well to the environment.
South Alabama’s offense piled up an unofficial* 578 yards and 28 first downs in a little over 110 snaps, including red zone “lockout” periods. The Jaguars scored a total of four touchdowns — three in the red zone — and allowed just three sacks and six tackles for loss all day.
“I was really pleased with the physicality up front on both sides of the ball,” head coach Kane Wommack said. “I’m really pleased and impressed with some of the things we’re doing offensively right now — mixing tempos, able to run the ball effectively, good perimeter game. Guys were where they were supposed to be for the majority of the scrimmage. And we’ve got guys at the quarterback position that can get the ball where it needs to go. You’ve got some explosive players, whether it’s out of the backfield or the perimeter that can create yards after contact and yards after catch. It’s really exciting to see.”
Bradley and second-team quarterback Desmond Trotter were both highly efficient, combining to complete 25 of 36 passes for 261 yards without an interception. Trotter threw the day’s only touchdown pass, a 58-yarder to Memphis transfer Javon Ivory on the first series of the day for the second-team offense.
South Alabama running backs combined for 233 yards and three touchdowns on 53 carries, including team-best 47 yards by freshman Jarvis Durr. Marco Lee added 39 yards on 10 carries, Ole Miss transfer Kentrel Bullock 37 yards on seven attempts and freshman PJ Martin 35 yards on seven carries.
Bullock scored a touchdown in the red zone, a 21-yard dash on which he broke multiple tackles. Martin added two scores, a 13-yarder and a 7-yarder.
“I think it was good but there’s going to be a lot to learn from,” Bradley said. “I think we can clean a lot up. I think we can make this a whole lot smoother, just make it more game-like getting in and out of the huddle, just tempo-like things. I think just that aspect we can improve on a whole lot more.”
Freshman Gio Lopez and Utah State transfer Bishop Davenport split third-team quarterback reps. Lopez completed 7 of 18 passes for 54 yards with an interception, but ran for 27 yards on two attempts. Davenport was 3-for-10 for 30 yards passing and added a 9-yard run.

Eighteen different receivers caught at least one pass, with freshman tight end Trent Thomas grabbing four and veterans Devin Voisin and Caullin Lacy three each. Ivory caught just two passes, but got behind the secondary for the day’s most-explosive play, his 58-yard touchdown.
“It feels great,” Ivory said. “It’s always good to always start the game real quick with a touchdown. They had a good drive going with the first-team offense and we basically came out there and ran the whole field. I was just thinking first thing to get going when you come out there on offense is to get quick points. Once I saw the play call and I had the post I was like ‘I’m going to go ahead and get in the end zone.’”
The defense did have its moments, including a lunging interception by freshman safety Cole Blaylock and a forced fumble by junior-college transfer cornerback Brian Dillard. Linebacker Blayne Myrick, a redshirt freshman, hopped on the loose ball.
Charles Coleman had two of the defense’s three “touch” sacks, with Carlos Johnson netting the other. Linebacker James Miller had a pair of tackles for loss, while safeties Rickey Hyatt and Mike Harris each had a pass breakup.
“I feel like we had good effort, but towards the end we’ve got to focus more on detail with our tackling and just keeping the opponent out of the red zone and out of the end zone most importantly,” nose tackle Wy’Kevious Thomas said. “The defense, we’ve been winning a lot and we’ve been doing good, but today we’re kind of disappointed a little bit with our finish. Other than that, it’s been great — great effort, great physicality, great detail.”
A handful of players did not scrimmage Saturday due to nagging injuries, including running back La’Damian Webb, wide receiver Jay’Juan Townsend, offensive lineman Reed Buys, defensive lineman Ed Smith and linebacker Ke’Shun Brown. None of the injuries are considered long-term concerns that will extend into the season.
South Alabama takes Sunday off from practice before returning to the field on Monday morning. The Jaguars will scrimmage again next Saturday, Aug. 19.
