Thunderstorms cause significant damage to areas of Hoover

Severe thunderstorms swept over Alabama Friday evening and caused significant damage to areas of Hoover.

According to Hoover Mayor Frank Brocato, the majority of damage occurred in the Bluff Park community around Chapel Road and Park Avenue where some homes had trees fall on them and numerous roads were blocked by trees or power lines.

Following the storm damage, members of the Hoover Fire Department, Hoover Police Department and Hoover Public Works immediately responded to dozens of calls, primarily to remove trees from blocked roads, and to check structures that were damaged by trees.

Brocato said these crews worked through the night and are continuing to work today to clear streets blocked by trees and wires with the goal to have all streets open by 5 p.m. Saturday.

“Currently, we are still in response mode. We hope to begin the cleanup process by Monday or Tuesday of next week. Also at this time, I am not aware of any injuries that occurred,” Brocato said.

“I am grateful to our city employees that worked tirelessly through the night responding to these emergencies and I am grateful to the Jefferson County Public Works Department that responded so quickly to help us remove trees from roadways. I’d also like to thank the many citizens that helped to remove trees and assisted our fire, police and public works crews,” the mayor continued.

Brocato is asking people to stay out of the area due to low-hanging limbs, dangling wires and falling trees.
