Tua Tagovailoa raising money for wildfire victims

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa issued an appeal on Friday night for assistance for the victims of the recent wildfires in Hawaii.

On social media, the former Alabama All-American wrote: “In the wake of the Maui wildfires, our community needs us more than ever. With the strength of our ‘Ohana and the deep-rooted values of Aloha, let’s lend a hand to those in need. One-hundred percent of donations will directly support those affected in Hawaii.”

‘Ohana is a Hawaiian word meaning family.

Tagovailoa ended the note “Alofa atu, Tua.” “Alofa atu” means “Love you” in Samoan.

Tagovailoa is a native of Hawaii and starred at St. Louis School in Honolulu before joining the Crimson Tide.

Tagovailoa is using his charitable organization, the Tua Foundation, as the fundraising site. Those wanting to donate can do so via the foundation’s website.

The effort had raised almost $12,000 by 7:30 am. CDT Saturday. The donors list showed that $5,000 had been given by the Nick’s Kids Foundation, a charity of Alabama football coach Nick Saban and his wife, Terry Saban.

Wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui had killed at least 53 people, The Associated Press reported, and the town of Lahaina, “with a few rare exceptions, has been burned down,” Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said.

An All-American for the Crimson Tide in 2018, when he was the SEC Offensive Player of the Year and the winner of the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, Tagovailoa is preparing for his fourth NFL season with the Dolphins.

Tagovailoa did not play in Miami’s preseason opener on Friday night, when the Dolphins lost to the Atlanta Falcons 19-3.
