Mississippi woman gets 6 months after nearly 40 dead dogs, vulture were found at her ârescueâ
A Mississippi coast woman will serve six months in jail after pleading no contest to multiple counts of animal cruelty, the Sun Herald in Gulfport, Miss., is reporting.
In March 2022, Harrison County deputies went to what Collins called Deep South Rescue and found 30 dead dogs, mostly in black trash bags, along with eight dead puppies, also in trash bags.
They also found a dead vulture inside a cage. One emaciated retriever was found.
Collins was arrested and charged with 31 counts of simple animal cruelty and one count of felony animal cruelty, according to the report. The plea agreement was reached between Collins and Harrison County District Attorney Herman Cox.
A no contest plea carries no admission of guilt. In addition to her six-month sentence, Collins was ordered to pay nearly $3,000 in fines and restitution and $1,655 in court costs.
The report says Collins will not be allowed to own a domesticated animal for 15 years. After her jail sentence, she will have to submit to a psychiatric evaluation and have her case reviewed by the court every seven months.
