Thursday roundup: Gulf Shores, Montevallo, Winfield win
Braden Jackson caught an 80-yard touchdown pass and ran a kick back 65 yards as Class 5A No. 6 Gulf Shores finished the regular season with a 56-27 win over B.C. Rain.
The Dolphins improved to 9-1 overall and finished 7-1 in Region 1 play. They will host Carroll in the first round of the playoffs next week. B.C. Rain (4-6, 4-4) had its playoff hopes dashed.
JR Gardner rushed for 99 yards and 2 TDs on 16 carries, while Ronnie Royal added 78 yards and a TD on just 7 carries. He also caught 4 passes for 29 yards.
QB Brendon Byrd was a perfect 10-of-10 passing for 171 yards and 2 TDs. He also ran for 51 yards and a touchdown. Nick Carris also had a TD reception.
The Dolphins are in the playoffs for the first time since 2013.
BIRMINGHAM
Montevallo 21, Tarrant 14
The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a 4-6 record with the home win.
Braxton King threw a pair of touchdown passes to Jaydien Rutledge for Montevallo, from 13 yards in the first quarter and from 26 in the fourth. King also had a 10-yard TD run. King completed 3-of-5 passes for 85 yards. He had 6 rushing attempts for 26 yards.
Anthony Martin led Montevallo with 92 yards rushing on 11 attempts.
Charlie Adams and Elfreeman Morton had 10 tackles apiece for the Class 4A Bulldogs. Adams had a pair of sacks.
Class 3A Tarrant finishes the year at 2-8.
Mortimer Jordan 35, Fultondale 0
Terrance Gaines ran for three touchdowns and added a TD reception as the Blue Devils blanked Fultondale to close out the season at 2-8. Gaines had 22 rushing attempts for 167 yards and caught 3 passes for 68.
Garrett Ames completed 9-of-17 passes for 147 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception. Will Praytor caught 4 passes for 47 yards and a score.
The home team had 364 total yards – 217 on the ground – while holding Fultondale (0-10) to 85.
Ames hit Praytor for a 6-yard TD to get the Blue Devils on the board first. Gaines scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter, a 55-yard reception from Ames and another 5-yard run in the second and closed out the scoring with a 3-yard TD with 8:32 left in the game.
STATE
Winfield 47, Lamar County 14
The Pirates broke open a 14-all halftime tie at Vernon by scoring 33 unanswered points – 20 in the third period – to close out the regular season at 9-1. Winfield has won seven straight since a 49-42 loss at Gordo.
Aidan Quinn threw four touchdown passes and ran for another for the Pirates. Keylan Hughes ran for a pair of TDs and Drew Cook ran for another and had a 2-point conversion run.
Quinn completed 16-for-23 passes for 272 yards. His TD throws were to Sean Wyers, D’Angelo Bankhead and Miles Gann. Quinn led Winfield with 110 yards rushing on 9 carries.
The Bulldogs (5-5) got two TD runs by Ty Eskridge. Alexander Bradford hit 13-of-25 passes for 105 yards.
Class 3A Winfield hosts Geraldine to open the playoffs next week.
