A 73-year-old man died in a house fire early Thursday morning in Mobile, according to a report.

Gary Jones, who a neighbor said was legally blind, was found covered in soot and ash and unconscious by Mobile firefighters in the home on Kaiser Street, fire department spokesman Steven Millhouse told NBC 15.

Jones was removed from the home and firefighters were able to regain a pulse but Jones died.

“I just went to praying for the gentleman, the elderly gentleman. He’s blind, legally blind,” neighbor Keith Moore told the outlet.

Neighbors told NBC 15 they tried breaking the windows of the home in an attempt to save Jones before first responders arrived.
