A-List No. 15: Mississippi State QB commit hopes for big senior year
The A-List is AL.com’s ranking of the top 15 senior prospects in the state of Alabama. We will count down one each day until No. 1 is revealed Aug. 23.
Josh Flowers has been overcoming tall obstacles his entire life. That’s what happens when you’re the youngest of five siblings, including former Alabama running back signee Desherrius Flowers.
“The closest one to me in age is six years,” Flowers said. “I was always trying to keep up with them. They picked on me a little, but I still held my ground. I knew I had to try hard if I was going to be able to compete with them.”
The tough competition has paid off for Flowers, who has developed into one of the state’s best quarterbacks.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Baker High School senior is committed to the Mississippi State Bulldogs. He will graduate in December and plans to compete for the starting job when veteran Will Rogers moves on after this season.
Last year at Baker, Flowers passed for 1,628 yards while competing 64 percent of his passes. He threw 13 touchdown passes with only two interceptions. He also rushed for 1,442 yards and 15 touchdowns. As a two-year starter, he has already thrown for 33 touchdowns with only four interceptions.
While Flowers is one of the most dynamic running quarterbacks in the Class of 2024, he is ready to show his passing ability even more as a senior.
“I definitely can run, but in the SEC you have to make that big-boy throw and stand in there and take a hit,” Flowers said. “Since I got to high school, I’ve been working on my throwing mechanics. I’m way ahead of where I was two years ago, when I was playing more on instincts.
“Then you watch film of guys like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Patrick Mahomes and how they’re game planning and you learn more. I watched some of my junior tape and sometimes I was late getting the ball out. You can’t be greedy. You have to take what they give you.”
Flowers, No. 15 on the A-List ranking of state prospects, is the leader of a Baker offense that has a chance to be extremely explosive. His wide receivers include Auburn commit Bryce Cain and Troy commit K.J. Beckham, while Rod Taylor is set to have a big year at running back.
Flowers was never tempted to play high school football anywhere other than Baker.
“Some people tried to get me to transfer, but I just wanted to stay where I’m at and help my guys get noticed,” Flowers said. “And I want to help us all have success with the guys we grew up playing with. I’m working to have a great year as a team, throw for 30 touchdowns then get to work being the best I can be at Mississippi State.”

Randy Kennedy’s scouting report: By choice or by necessity, Josh Flowers has been an impressive runner during his high school career. But Flowers has the mentality to be a well-rounded quarterback. His deep-passing skills are already elite.
